Nigel Gwynne-Evans

CHIEF DIRECTOR FOR AFRICAN INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT AT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRADE AND INDUSTRY IN SOUTH AFRICA

Nigel is Chief Director for African Industrial Development at the Department of Trade and Industry in South Africa.  He has been actively involved in the regional industrialization agenda, managing a research programme into regional value-chains and is actively pursuing opportunities across the continent that will further industrialization and advance South Africa’s interests.  He has also headed up the agri-processing division of the dti in an acting capacity and is on the G20 and World Economic Forum working groups on the 4th Industrial Revolution. 

He has spent most of his career in the Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Wesgro, and was instrumental in the establishment of a wide range of not-for-profit cluster bodies, as well as developing a comprehensive programme of support for these entities.  In addition he initiated a range of innovative projects in the Cape, including the Cape Town Film Studios, the GreenCape Initiative, the Saldanha IDZ, the Learning Cape Initiative and the Atlantis Green Manufacturing Zone.  He has a master’s in economics from London University (SOAS), and Economics degrees from Stellenbosch.
