Jack van der Merwe has been working in the transport sector for more than 48 years. Having qualified as an Engineer, he was the Director General of the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport from 1995 to 2005. During this period, Van der Merwe was also appointed as project leader for the Gautrain Rapid Rail Link project, an iconic project that he has headed from inception through to implementation over a period of 22 years. In 1998, the Transportation Engineering Division of the South African Institution of Civil Engineering awarded him the Chairman’s Award for Meritorious Service to the Transportation Profession. In February 2014 he was made an Honorary Fellow of the South Africa Institution of Civil Engineers. He is a Fellow of the South African Academy of Engineers. In 2010, Van der Merwe was awarded the University of Pretoria’s Laureate Award for exceptional achievements and promoting the interests of the University of Pretoria by the Tuks Alumni Board. He was elected President for the African Association of Public Transport (UATP) and Vice-President of the International Association of Public Transport (UITP). He currently serves on the UITP Policy Board. In 2018, he was awarded with the Da Vince Institute for Technology Management Laureate Award. The Award is a Social Architecture conferred by the Council to an individual who through insightful leadership and a passion for the development of communities and society at large, has made a singular contribution to the re-definition of society.
