Dr Daniel Visser – Group Manager: Planning & Knowledge Management, CSIR, South Africa

I will be discussing developments within the South African innovation landscape regarding the Fourth Industrial Revolution. This will include platforms, commissions and consortia that have been formed or are planned to support the SA 4IR response and some technologies that have already been developed and applied.

Dr Visser is the Group Manager for Planning and Knowledge Management for the CSIR and holds a PhD (Biochemistry) from Rhodes University. He has been with CSIR or 17 years, where he has been a principal researcher, business development manager and Executive Director of the Biosciences Unit and Strategic Research Manager on the Research and Development Portfolio before moving to his current position. He has published more than 25 peer-reviewed articles, patents and conference proceedings. For the past 5 years Dr Visser has played central role at the CSIR, responsible for strategy and strategic programs across all of CSIR’s technology areas. Here he helped define the strategic research direction of the organization and the associated research capacity development. Currently he is responsible for coordinating CSIR’s activities related to the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Dr Visser also sits on the DST’s Fourth Industrial Revolution committee and is a senior advisor to the South African Parliament in this domain.
